I certainly have some book titles that come to mind like "The Grapes of Wrath," "Fair and Tender Ladies," "Mississippi Sissy," "Poisonwood Bible," "The Color Purple," "The Red Tent," "To Kill A Mockingbird." But I tend to think more of writers that have affected me, encouraged me, guided me with their words. Q: Can you tell us five or 10 books that mean a lot to you and why.Ī. ![]() There is such power and beauty in her writing, and I cannot seem to get enough of it. Right now, I'm spending a lot of time reading Claudia Emerson, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet who died in December. But I can say that at specific times in my life one writer may speak to me more powerfully than another. And I shy away from this question the older I get. ![]() That's one of the most exciting aspects of writing, harvesting the ideas, then separating the wheat from the chaff so to speak. The book I'm currently working on came from a tombstone. They can come from newspaper articles, a song, a conversation. ![]() I just have to be open to the world around me. ![]()
